Default Some n00by questions!

Hi there, I'm Pabmeister. I've been kinda soloing through GW and have a small guild of friends who are all also inexperienced and I have a few basic questions.

Background
This is my first time though the game and i'm in Sanctum Cay. I've been solo'ing and pugging around through the missions and have just hit lvl 20.

1. Salvage or sell?
What makes more economic sense most of the time? Is it better to salvage every crap sword/sheild/axe/whatever I find for ingots and stuff or is it better to just sell it for the piddly 6 g I get for them?

2. W/Mo skill /attribute setup
Something basic, and some guidelines, I'm not really interested in the SOOPER UBER LEET FARMER SWORD-MASTER BUILD OF ULTIMATE 15K ARMOR LEETNESS. Something practical that doesnt need Elite-skills that I have no idea/ability to find.

3. 15 stat points?
I'm in the prophecies campaign. I need more attributes and I hear you get 15 more somewhere but no one wants to tell me where ingame. "LAWL NOOB" are the best directions I've gotten to date.

4. My role
What exactly entails as a W/Mo's job in a party? Pure offence heavily reliant on monks? A big damage taker? I just cant seem to do either well.

5. What kind of things are really worth keeping?
A guy from work gave me a max damage firey dragon sword that I sold to a merchant for 84g when I needed money to buy my guild hall. DOH!
What else is worth it? What are the SoJ's of Guildwars (currency for non-diablo players :P). What runes are usefull? Sups, Maj's or minors?

6. Buying
How often should I buy armor/weapons? Is it worth buying the merchants weapons (like in Lions Arch) if I don't have better? Is buying this crap SUPPOSED to make you poor?

7. Defence
What are numbers for things like sheilds and armor? I've got armor that fournishes 50 def and a sheild that shlopps on 9. Is this 9 worth the loss of damage output I could get from a hammer? Is the 22~ish defence from the Dolydak Signet worth it? (Maybe i'm doing it wrong 'cos i'm allways dead.)

Thanks alot.

1) you should salvage the armour if you need materials for new armour. if you dont then you should identify them and sell the merchant you get slightly more if you iden.

2) http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/f...play.php?f=210
heaps of war builds in there...

3) http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...5+attrib utes

4) you have the most defence out of any profession so you are usually one of the people to run in first and take the first blows. and since ur a w/mo you have damage skills and you can heal yourself (with skills like vigourous spirit, breeze, mending etc)

5) Things with "rare skins" people want (sickle, fellblade, chaos axe serpant axe)...things with "perfect" mods (+5 energy, enchants lasts 20% longer, max dmg weapon with dmg +15 while health above 50 ...etc) oh and check the rune trader for prices, runes are usually what the NPC sells for minus a few plat/gold.

6) stick with a max dmg weapon from collectors, they may look crap but they do have good mods like max damage 15^50 etc... then later on when you have too much money buy a weapon that looks good as well.

7)max defence armours are at droknars forge. other max defence armours like the 15k armours are just for looks. max defence for shield is 16. doylak signet can be really useful sometimes, but other times, the slow movement screw u up... try shouts like watch yourself and shields up for defence...

1. Sell. I've never really found it all that useful to salvage everything that I pick up. Most of the time I find I'm back in a town/outpost before my inventory gets filled up with a bunch of non-max useless junk. But, you may want to salvage things that you get and build up a stack of 250 raw crafting material (iron, cloth, tanned hides, etc.) before you start selling everything you pick up. You'll find it'll be cheaper and more convenient to use the materials that you have stored rather than having to buy or farm them when you find out you need them.

2. The basic skills that you start out with are good enough. Play around with builds and pick up as many skills along the way that you can (if you intend to continue play this game).

3. You'll get one of them in the desert and another after you've ascended or atleast that's how I remember it. It's been so long since I've last had to get them that I've forgotten.

4. You basically take the hits for the soft targets. Hack and slash away at enemy groups and have them aggro around you while the soft targets pick things off from a distance. It's a pretty simple and easy role to play, plus this is PvE so it's not overly complicated.

5. Max damage and low requirement items that have good add-ons. Anything that helps you is good enough to keep and while that sounds vague it's also a learning process and you'll get items that will fit your playing style. Some items that might be useful to you might be useless to someone else. Superior and Minor runes are going to be the ones that are most useful. But you'll probably find yourself having to use a major vigor and major absorb rather than Superiors.

6. Buy new armor when you find yourself taking a lot of damage relative to what's attacking you. Personally I get armor in Ascalon and then get collectors armor in the desert rather than wasting cash and don't bother to buy new armor until I get to droks.

7. This will probably answer a lot more of your questions than people posting here can. Click Here

On the sell or salvage front. I'd say definately salvage. Stops your inventory from getting clogged up and stacks to 250 while only taking up one space. Also a stack of say iron sells for 1250gp at the merch, which works out at 5gp per iron. If i have a crap white drop worth 50 on average (in south shivers) that will generally salvage into 10 iron ingots which also works out at 5gp. So long and short of it; salvaging lets you carry more gp's worth of stuff in your inventory without the loss of any value. Of course salvage kits cost something but the extra GP from 'precious' and 'highly salvageable' items will cover that.

And now with Factions, you don't even have to spend any gold buying ID/Salvage kits as you can get them 'free' from the Quartermasters after getting a few recommendations/credits/totems/requests from quests.

There are two quests that each give you 15 attribute points. As I recall you have to be ascended to get the 2 quests (I know you have to be for 1).

One is called The Forgotten Ones and you can find it at Destiny's Gorge in the Crystal Desert. Talk to Annelle Fipps and she can fill you in on the details. I'm a E/Me and didn't have any problems doing this one with henchies. This one you might not have to be ascended for either.

The second is The Heroes Challenge and it can be found in Droknar's Forge from a young lady named Vanyi. This one is a bit tricky since you have to have completed The Heroes Journey quest (given by Vanyi too as I recall) and any one of the "Path" quests (one of the quests that allows you to change out your secondary profession). I've had a really hard time trying to complete this one since getting a group of players together to do it is tough (might be easier on you with your guild) and the henchies just don't cut it against the mass of opponents between you and your goal.

If you (or anyone else) would like a hand with either/both just PM me (Teklys Starshine) in-game.

1. Sell, for the most part, especially non-max damage weapons and low worth collector items.

2. Sorry, I'm not the guy for this, I have never played a warrior, EVER, in 450 hrs of play time.

3. If you haven't got the answer yet, try www.guildwiki.org and search for attribute points.

4. Really depends on the situation. You have to be flexible with your abilities if you don't want to be labeled a traditional wammo.

5. For the most part, if it isn't max damage or a max upgrade/rune, you can sell it. Collector items from the desert and southern shiverpeaks are worth hanging on to as well sometimes, if you find the right buyer.

6. Jeez, all I buy anymore are salvage and ID kits, for the most part.

7. Again, I don't play warriors, sorry, no advice here...

Hope this helps a little!

Imo, the areas before the southern shivers or before the desert aren't that good for salvaging drops. You hardly make more $$ that way.
I would salvage some items that look like they're made of iron or steel and hope for steel ingots (with an expert salvage kit).

Since you're a warrior, you'll need some steel later on.

Since you're still among noob players (the guys in your party, you came here to ask for help, that classifies you as good)... These new guys won't allow you to be a good strong warrior so you'll probably have to tag along for now.

I would suggest this for a W/Mo:

1 Damage
2 Damage
3 Damage / increased attack speed
4 Defense
5 utility/defense
6 utility/defense
7 utility/selfheal
8 Rebirth and only rebirt, no resurrect, no res sig, just rebirth( in PvP, bring res sig)

Fill in whatever you like.

There's more to it than that ^

Max damage weapons are worthless unless they have a good damagemod.
15%^50 aka +15% damage increase while health is above 50% is good.

A lot of scammers will try to sell you crap like a max damage purple axe without any other mods for 2k or more.

Try to avoid buying ANYTHING from other players. 99% of the time you're losing out.

I see a lot of people with crappy weapons. I tell them it's crap and that they should use a different one. They they flame me and say "ITS WORTH 7K NUB THIS IS BEST WAEPON!!!!"
6. Buying
How often should I buy armor/weapons? Is it worth buying the merchants weapons (like in Lions Arch) if I don't have better? Is buying this crap SUPPOSED to make you poor?
Quote:
What you find should probably be good enough. Once you get to the city with all the snow and all the monks, buy a weapon there. Those are the best you'll find anywhere (buy from trader, nor people).

Think about this: every new piece of armour you buy is a whole new piece of armour. You sell your old and you buy a completely new one. The new one is usually like 10 points better than your old. So you're basically paying full money for a small upgrade X.x

SPOLERS BELOW
max armors for warrior are 80 to 110 AL
Shields max at 16.

Hammerwarriors are rare in PvE. In fact, when I play monk, I don't like a hammerer int he team because he'll take a lot more damage.

The +16 AL from the shield is ok... but that's not why we use shields.
We use shields for the +16al AND the other bonuses a shield will give.

For example, absorption/damage reduction, increased health. Sometimes even increased attributes (20% to have +1tactics while using a skill, rare)

Just to reiterate what a few posters have already mentioned....

GuildWiki is a newbie's best friend. The answer to almost any question you might have can be found there. Go there, bookmark it and use it often

In regards to Question #2, Don Zardeone's skill outline is an excellent suggestion, and in general will work well if you follow it. My only suggestion in regards to that is that a Self Heal should be mandatory for most warrior builds There are specific builds and team builds where it is not necessary, but in general you should plan on taking one.

Question #5- What's really worth keeping?.....geez, that's a loaded question. Everyone will have a different option on this. Again GuildWiki can help you make up your own mind. The describe all of the weapon & off hand items modifiers and upgrades. Typically, the higher the damage, modifier or upgrade is to the maximum, the better the item it is. Then you need to evaluate the modifiers based on your play style. For example, a Sword with a +15% damage modifier while hexed is not as useful for my warrior as a Sword with a +15% damage modifier while in stance. As a warrior I tend to be enjoy being in stances more often than I like being hexed But if you find a (while hexed) items with good upgrades, then you may want to keep it and use it for a while until you find something better. If I'm not sure about an item, I usually keep it for a while to see if I have a use for it, the periodic purge the storage of items I never use. Better to to keep an item for a while and determine it's really value than to merchant something for dirt cheap and later find out it was valuable

On the issues in Question #8, keep in mind Hammers have a slow attack speed than Swords & Axes also. You can look up the exact details in GuildWiki on attack speeds. You need to also keep this mind when making the trade off between Hammer or Sword/Axe. While Hammer Warriors are rare in PvE they are fun to play. The key to keeping the monks from hating you is to make sure that any other warriors in the group are Sword/Axe/Shield guys and let them be the person that draws aggro. Your role then is to come in and take off the pressure and knock people down Yes the armor gain from Dolyak's Signet is worth it. Dolyak's is a great defensive spell for warriors, but you need to use it wisely. If the key to winning the battle (or quest or mission) depends on the warrior having mobility, then Dolyak's is a bad skill to use. Again somewhere on GuildWiki there is an article on armor and it's effects. It's worth reading so you understand how it works.
